Ukrainian scholar, journalist, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor, expert in the field of mass communication and media education

Biography and Career

Born: July 19, 1961 in Luhansk. At the age of 17, he worked at the Voroshilovhradska 1-2 underground mine. In 1983, he graduated from Luhansk Pedagogical Institute with a degree in History.

Since 1989, he has been working at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv: postgraduate student, assistant, associate professor of the Faculty of Journalism.

In 1995–1999, he was Deputy Director for Scientific Work at the Institute of Journalism.

In 1996, he defended his doctoral dissertation “Methodology and Techniques of Researching the Content of Mass Communication”.

Since 1997, he has been Professor at the Department of Periodicals, and subsequently - Head of the Department of Organization of Mass Media Activities (later the Department of Advertising and Public Relations) of the Institute of Journalism, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

Academic Degree: Doctor of Philological Sciences (1996), Professor (2000)

President: the Academy of Ukrainian Press (since 2001) =-- Member of: the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NSJU), the Commission on Journalistic Ethics (until 2021), the Centre for Free Press, the All-Ukrainian Fund “Journalistic Initiative”, the Public Council under the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Freedom of Speech, and the Supervisory Board of the Ukrainian National Professional Journalism Competition “Honour of the Profession.”

Scientific Works

Valeriy Ivanov has authored over 550 scientific works, including:

  • 30 monographs
  • 10 textbooks
  • 26 manuals
  • 48 brochures

  • "Content Analysis: Methodology and Research Methods" (1994)
  • "Sociology of Mass Communication" (1999, 2000, 2003)
  • "Newspaper Design Techniques" (1994, 1997, 2000)

  • "Journalistic Ethics" (2006, with V. Serdiuk)
  • "Practical Guide to Journalistic Ethics" (2012, with S. Shturkhetskyi)
  • "Fundamentals of Computer Journalism" (1995)
  • "Experience of Content Analysis" (2005)

His articles have been published in Switzerland, Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Armenia, and Kazakhstan.

Educational Work

Valeriy Ivanov advocates for media literacy, developing critical thinking in society, and is involved in forming journalistic ethics standards in Ukraine. As a media expert, he organizes and participates in thematic conferences and trainings.

In October 2024, as part of Global Media and Information Literacy Week, the Academy of Ukrainian Press held a webinar on methods for developing critical thinking in students. Valeriy Ivanov was a speaker, emphasizing the importance of integrating media education into the training process.

In March-April 2025, the Academy of Ukrainian Press (AUP) conducted a series of two-day "STOPmanipulator" trainings with support from the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom. The participants learned about manipulation mechanisms, fake news detection, and methods of protection against information attacks.

“The most effective manipulation is the one that disguised as the truth. We don’t notice how we start thinking for someone else. Learning to see this means taking back control,” noted Valeriy Ivanov.

In January 2025, the AUP, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, organized the online forum “Development of Media Education in Ukraine: Regional Dimension,” which brought together 850 participants from various regions of Ukraine. The goal was to mobilize educators to counteract hostile information influences.

“Our task is to mobilize educators to counteract enemy lies, propaganda, and manipulation so that they can, in turn, set up their students and their parents do the same,” said Valeriy Ivanov.
